Differential and transfer cases are typically found in all wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles although some older two-wheel drive vehicles will have a rear differential. Both the transfer cases and differentials are filled with fluid which is subjected to the same heat and wear and tear as the transmission and should be maintained in a similar way i.e. with fluid services and reseal services when necessary.
As with transmissions if you hear a whining or howling noise, or find fluids on the floor, do not hesitate in bringing in the vehicle for an inspection. A fluid replacement or reseal service may be all that is required, or a damaged or worn internal part may need replacing.
